This was one of the very first tunes to have been penned by the formidable team of Elton John (piano/vocals) and Bernie Taupin (lyrics). In the liner notes to the Rare Masters (1992) compilation, Taupin fondly recalls “Skyline Pigeon” as “a landmark as far as our writing was concerned.” The strong melodic and lyrical nature of the tune foreshadows similar tones on tracks such as “The King Must Die”, “Border Song” and the haunting “Funeral For A Friend” instrumental prelude to “Love Lies Bleeding”. The cut initially surfaced on Elton’s debut long player Empty Sky (1969) in a harpsichord-driven arrangement that seemed to elegantly envelop Taupin’s images of liberation (“Turn me loose from your hands/Let me fly to distant lands”). His poetic licence is also evident in the cinematic quality of lines such as “And my eyes are mirrors of the world outside/Thinking of the way that the wind can turn the tide/And these shadows turn from purple into grey”. The composition was the focus of the album and quickly became a “turntable hit” for the BBC and U.K. pirate radio stations such as Radio Caroline. It remained a part of his concert repertoire throughout the early ‘70s. During the sessions for Don’t Shoot Me … I’m Only The Piano Player (1973), Elton reworked it into an equally sophisticated ‘piano version’ and was featured as the b-side to the hit single “Daniel”. This rendition is available on several titles -- as a bonus track on the 1995 remastered CD issue of Don’t Shoot Me …, Lady Samantha (1980), as well as the more complete two-disc Rare Masters (1992) compilation. A stunning live version -- recorded on May 18th, 1974 at Royal Festival Hall -- can be heard on the highly recommended Here And There (1976) which has been expanded onto two CDs and includes over a dozen additional previously unissued performances. Elton also played “Skyline Pigeon” at the funeral of high profile AIDS victim Ryan White -- who chose the lines “Turn me loose from your hands/Let me fly to distant lands/Fly away skyline pigeon fly/Towards the dreams/You've left so very far behind” as his own epitaph.
